The Bakery Review

Locals have long known of good bakeries spread throughout town and the list is fairly short: Aurora Borealis Cakes & Desserts, Charlie’s Bakery, Europa Bakery, Flying Dutchman European Pastry Shop, Great Harvest Bread Company, Laroma Bakery.

Everyone knows about the cakes at Aurora and the delicious pastries at Dutchman, or the milk bread at Charlie’s.  While I think that these are fantastic foods and great companies I’d like to introduce my reviews of two new bakeries that have shown up in the past few weeks/months.  One will definitely be my favorite, rivaling the White Chocolate bread at the Great Harvest Bread Company and I hope that you visit enough to keep the deliciousness coming.

Yummy Bakery

Recently I was re-routed because of road construction and drove by the Yummy Bakery.  While the Yummy Bakery isn't brand new, it's in a new location.  Located at 1300 W. 36th Avenue, the Yummy Bakery is now beside a used car lot.  While the outside is well painted, the stairs to the entrance are not very inviting.  Once you get inside, however, all’s well.  There are a few places to sit and eat.  In the display case there is a sharp array of deserts that just scream “buy me.”

I loaded up with goodies.  Coconut bread, lady finger cookies, half round of sweet cake, half round of mocha sweet cake, some other breads and cookies…the names of things do not matter.  The breads are exactly like I thought they should/would be in texture, smell and taste. Everything, well, almost everything, was absolutely delicious.  There must be a huge push to make cupcake frosting taste like shortening.  The cup cake itself, though, was perfect.

I received all of this for $27.  I bought 7 items and most of them cost $3 or less with one item making up the difference.  The lady at the register, Yang, is the entrepreneur who brought this heavenly shop to us.  She bakes the goods herself and is a gracious host.  I am so impressed by the Yummy Bakery that I will be visiting and buying on a weekly basis.  I’m pretty sure this bakery uses real sugar…even if it isn’t in the name (like the Sugar Spoon) or the cup cake frosting.

Sugar Spoon

Located on Spenard by the big windmill near Fireweed, I had a blueberry desert from this cozy little shop before I had actually visited the shop.  It was soft and moist, held together well and was full of flavor.  I tracked the Sugar Spoon down this spring and tried a few other products with great hope.

Cup cakes.  Everyone loves cup cakes and I think that those who don’t like cup cakes are just trying to pull a reverse psychology on themselves to keep from eating them for health reasons.  The cup cakes at the Sugar Spoon were definitely not sugary.  In fact, none of the deserts that I tried were sweet at all.  The icing tasted like shortening and the cake was definitely dry.  I do not think that I ordered a discounted-day+-old cup cake but it did taste like it.

Key-Lime desert:  I love Key-Lime.  It is one of those things I order pretty much everywhere I eat when it’s available.  I’ve seen many different variations.  Sugar Spoon's was in an edible cup that was so tough that I broke it buy smashing it with the handle of my fork instead of cutting it.  This might not be a bad thing except it chewed the same way as well.  Maybe it was an exotic hard candy and I’m missing the point.  The Key-Lime, on the other hand, was tart and acidic enough to take the taste buds completely out of my  mouth.  It definitely tickled the tongue.

In all fairness I think the purpose of the Sugar Spoon is to not use sugar in their deserts.  Since it has sugar in the name, I was really disappointed. For the price of $35 it was really tough to eat anything except for the blueberry desert.

My favorite part of the Sugar Spoon, though, was the coffee.  I had a cup of coffee and I tried the cocoa nut cream pie latte.  Interesting and very good.  It had cocoa nut in the drink and really did taste like pie.  I’m not going back though.  A lot of companies have great coffee.

Before people who can’t eat sugar start bashing me I can say this.  I can eat sugar.  I like sugar in my deserts.  While I have many flaws, I am not over weight and or contributing to the obesity plague of the USA.  This article is about the Sugar Spoon not being as sweet as it’s name.  Contact us if you can’t eat sugar and can write a good article as to why Sugar Spoon enriches your life.
